Review: Aveda Be Curly Style-Prep

Adds moisture and curl definition as it seals the cuticle, taming frizz all day. Detangles to reduce breakage from combing. Also makes styling curls easier and helps maintain them longer—while leaving hair soft, not “crunchy.” Boosts the effects of be curly™ curl enhancer.
- Wheat protein and organic aloe blend expands when hair is wet and retracts when dry to intensify curl or wave—and control frizz all day long.
- Organic baobab and babassu oil and macadamia nut help seal, soften and moisturize hair.
- Guar bean and plant-derived cellulose help maintain curly styles throughout the day.
- Certified organic lime, lemon, bergamot, orange and other pure plant and flower essences create a light, refreshing aroma.

This is a soft hold styler that can be used alone to achieve big, defined, fluffy hair. It's a very thin runny consistency that is very easy to spread through the hair. When purchasing this product, I was told that all I would need is 2 pumps of this in the hair and something for hold. I looked at the lady, looked at her hair, looked at the bottle then pointed at my hair and said, two pumps per section? And she replied in her -as a matter of fact voice- "no 2 pumps for all your hair". Laughing at her in my head, I bought it and left.

The first time I tried this product; I parted my hair in 4 sections and used one pump per section then applied Curls in a bottle on top then diffused. While my hair was big and fluffy and curly... it was DRY! It looked good but it felt dry and looked dryer than it would've for first day hair. My hair also didn't clump the way it usually would. So after this encounter I was ready to count it as a loss but I read the ingredients and decided to experiment with it some more.

The 2nd time around I used smaller sections and used a moisturizing leave-in before applying 1 pump of the Style Prep to each section. After that I raked a medium hold gel through each section and diffused. This yielded  amazing results! See pics below.

I had high hopes for this product but unfortunately it wasn't moisturizing enough on it's own. I also think that the wheat protein in this product makes my hair feel rough even though it looks fluffy. At $24 for 4oz I will continue using this product until it's all gone but only underneath a moisturizing medium hold gel like KMF Upper Management. With that said, I probably won't repurchase this product once I finish it.
