DIY Hair Butter & Hair Milk Recipes

By TouchOfSwank - September 06, 2013

As many know, I'm kinda-sorta-recovering but still a little bit of a product junkie. I'm always looking for the next best thing to use in my hair. With the amount of ingredients lists I was reading, it was only a matter of time before I took an interest in making some of my own products. The first thing I thought to try was of course, hair butters. (Had to make use of the raw shea butter and oils somehow right?!) I soon realized that hair milks worked better on my hair since I am mostly a wash&go girl, so I went ahead and made that also. I must say both turned out very well so I thought I'd share. They're moisturizing, easy to apply, absorb quickly and I personally love the consistencies. Here are a couple recipes I used, but feel free to mix it up and use what works best for you.

Hair Butter mix

  • 2tbs Shea butter
  • 2tbs Mango butter
  • 1tbs Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1tbs Almond Oil
  • 1tbs Avocado oil
  • 5 drops Orange essential oil
  • fragrance (optional)

Hair Milk mix

  • 2tbs mago butter
  • tbs shea butter
  • 1 tbs coconut oil
  • 1 tbs aloe vera gel
  • 1 tbs avocado oil
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 0.5 tbs castor oil
  • 4oz distilled water
  • 1 tbs Emulsifying wax
  • 5 drops Essential oil
  • fragrance (optional)

How to:

  1. Melt the butters and emulsifying wax** using the double boiler method.
  2. Once they are all melted let it cool for about a minute.
  3. Add your oils of choice and slowly pour in the water and aloe vera
  4. Begin to blend with a hand mixer.
  5. Allow the mixture to sit for a 5 minutes after mixing for about 3 minutes. You will notice the hair milk thickening.
  6. During your last mixing, add in the essential oil (and fragrance). I added orange essential oil and mango fragrance.
  7. Mix until you have your desired consistency then add mixture to a bottle/container.
  8. Storing it in the fridge will add to its shelf life**For the hair butter recipe, you would follow the same method without the emulsifying wax.
Smooches

    1. It lasted a few months when stored at a cool temperature. The emulsifying wax and essential oils serve as preservatives.
